Cathead Caution

An Accident Waiting to Happen

The Use of Catheads

If something is an accident waiting to happen should you wait until something happens? Catheads have been used for years but does that make them safe? The answer to both of these questions is “NO”. Catheads are used to move heavy rams (weights) up and down in the process of drilling and augering. There is a safer way to perform the same winch line and hoisting operations as the cathead without using the heavy weights. The Idaho Department of Transportation has used the Atlas hydraulic casing hammer to replace the hoisting operations that utilize the cathead on many of the tasks that they perform. Not only is the Atlas hydraulic casing hammer more efficient it is safer to use. The rope used in the cathead set up is famous for its ability to remove body parts with relative ease.  Fingers, hands and arms have been dismembered by the rope. Not only are part parts at risk but equipment can also be damaged by the unsafe operation of the cathead. Due to the dangerous nature of the cathead operations, the Province of Alberta in Canada has banned the use of rope operated friction catheads as of December 31, 2004.

On the other hand, the Atlas hydraulic casing hammer is designed with safety in mind. The hydraulic casing hammer replaces the dangerous drop hammer that is operated by catheads. The Atlas hydraulic casing hammer is attached to a hydraulic winch which gives the operator FULL and safe control over the procedure. The hydraulic casing hammer makes the use of hazardous catheads unnecessary.

The hammers are also environmentally friendly. Since they are hydraulically driven there isn’t any harmful polluting air exhausted by the hammers. The hammers are environmentally clean running and do not leave any contaminating water or oil around the drill site.

Atlas hydraulic hammers are the safe, environmentally friendly alternative to catheads.  For safety’s sake to learn more about the SAFE AND SOUND hydraulic casing hammer please contact:
